Magazine development

Today I edited and manipulated the image for the final magazine. I put a black background behind the image in a background layer and then downloaded a texture to put it into a badge to apply in an off-black grey colour to make the background image textured rather than plain black. I did this to link to the name of our film as detritus links to decay thus the background is damaged and speckled.

I then decided to brighten the hue of the red on the image and add a gradient to the background to make the image blend in more. I then darkened the contrast and brought down the lightness.
I changed the name of the magazine to Macbre and then downloaded a font to use. I then looked at two magazines (below) by Scream and are using them for reference whilst making. This is shown in the placement of my image and composition of the film title and puffs to ensure the magazine is as conventional to the horror genre.
I moved the puff to the right up next to the magazine name so i could put the issue number and price there in a conventional way. I also added the plus banner at the bottom of the page as it is conventional and used by Scream magazine.
I added an image to the right of my main image just like Scream magazine does thus making mine conventional. This is featuring of another student film 'Angela' and to the left the film 'The Blind Spot'.

Diary Logs
28.09.2015
Over the week and weekend, both in and outside of lessons i have been completing the horror genre research task for the pre-production stage. I am on track for the deadline and all shall be uploaded on time.
23.10.2015
Today i uploaded my mood boards for location, costume, props and makeup for the pre-production task. I used the content looked at with the team for reference and my knowledge gained from the horror genre research task to aid me.
27.10.2015
The group and i discussed the story-board and components of the film assembled during pre-production and began to look into the process of actually booking and finding locations. We found difficulty with finding locations to use for the film at this stage and began to look online.
3.11.2015
We revised the story-board as a group and looked into the 'do-able' shots and how we could make it work. We made sure to stay in with the original idea but make changes to it to make it work.
5.11.2015
Today we contacted 3 locations by phone and found that the red house in bexleyheath was a location that was most applicable and allowed us to film for free in sections of the house.
I think my current grade is a B as we have now got good footage and started the editing process. We are about to do the photoshoot for the magazine and poster and I believe my contribution grade is high within the group.

Essays 1a)
Creativity
To evaluate and justify the extent that your awareness of conventions have influenced or effected the developmentes of your creativity
My creativity has developed over the two years from AS to A2 in a variety of ways. My research skills have developed greatly over the duration of the years and thus I have become more creative. In AS I carried out my audience research after the creation of my production. I only carried the research out through two or three variants of research processes such as questionnaires and social networking research. This was done by copying research carried out before by various people and thus was not creative at all. Furthermore, I did not use research in a productive way as it was collected after the project and I did not alter it after the collection. However at A2 my creativity developed and became more advanced as I used a variety of methods to use and apply audience research. Before even making the product I researched into finding what audience I would target and what they enjoyed most in relation to my product being created. I carried out research in various forms such as online research looking at reviews and cinema statistics then comparing them through gender, age and locations. Additionally, I used more research to gain a greater understanding of the task at hand and how to make the production successful.
Additionally my skills of applying research in a creative way has developed. At AS I did only one mood board of a couple magazines in relation to my genre however at A2 this became better as i created a variety of moodboards. I created a moodboard relating to locations, props, costume and also makeup. at A2 This portrays and broadened my creativity as rather than presenting my research in a word format I did so in visual form and in an original layout.
My application of conventions in my work has also developed over the two years as they have accentuated my creative outlooks on the project. This is shown in my A2 preproduction task as I looked and researched into genre. This was my textual analysis task. I took the conventions found in relation to my sub-genre and also overall genre and presented them in a variation of different mediums rather than generic PowerPoint presentations as I did at AS. This shows my creativity as I consumed more during he research period and thus in relation to what written I added more relevant visuals to allow the creative vision of my work to show through to those watching.
During the planning period I used more influences as we learnt about intertexual references. This helped and aided my creativity in the planning process as it allowed me to merge and create my own original idea from previous existing works that were successful. This made my work more creative as during the research i looked a large variety of films of my genre and then applied them to pitch.

Semiotics - Barthes
Based upon denotation (what word is) and connotation (word association). TThe question "What do we associate this with and why?" is asked.
Signifer & signified.denotation & connotation
Hitler's semiotics:
He believed in:
Eugenics
(a set of beliefs and practices which aims at improving the genetic quality of the human population)
White 'aryan race' - highest, strongest
Disabled, homosexual, ill, old - killed
Semiotics is the study of signs and the meanings associated with by the people in the society: the sign itself is meaningless.
'This is not a pipe' painting shows representation.
'Are we the baddies?' symbols, "why a skull? why not a star?". Why is the skull so bad? Its because of the connotations of the skull, the meanings created and agreed upon in society around the symbolism of a skull.
A sign is meaningless unless you attach a meaning to it and agree upon it in society.

Pre-production: Mood Boards
Costume
Alex is the final girl in the film thus this specific character profile will be portrayed through the costume chosen. She will wear high waisted black jeans and a high neck white top with long sleeves and a checkered shirt to cover her. From looking at previous films like Scream I found the final girl wears baggy plain clothing of which is not necessarily gender specific and they are portrayed as masculine. Furthermore 'Alex' will not wear a great multitude of make-up if not, barely any to portray her innocence and child-like representation.
Alex has a complete contrast to Kelly. Kelly dresses provocatively wearing black, low-cut, short clothing to convey her sexual impurity. Kelly takes on the roles of both the 'slut' and the 'Pandora' of the group as she was viewed as non-threatening towards any member of the group however due to her heavy drinking, sexual representation and abuse of smoking substances she is portrayed as a negative influence and the sub-text of our film will be societal punishment thus the most rebellious of the group becomes possessed: Kelly.
Amber and Tom are both polar opposites however have some similarities. Amber is from a middle class family and is seen as 'nerdy' when in comparison to the 'jock', Tom, and the other girls as she covers up her body. Amber and Tom both are in the same friendship group and participate in drinking alcohol and smoking tabacco and marijuana. Amber's costume is very stereotypical of his class and personality. She wears conservative outfits whereas Tom wears sportswear including varsity jackets/bomber jackets, nike trainers and skinny jeans.
Locations
The locations chosen for the moodboard portray the conventions of a teen horror. There is a haunted house of which is set in the woods and the teenagers explore. We want an old house with vintage features such as old wallpaper and wooden floorboards in the interior to give a abandoned feel to it. As a result we decided we want to film in the red house of which is an old artist's house.
Props
We want the teenagers to be taking drugs and drinking alcohol as it fits in with the sub-text of our film. Alex will decline the drugs and alcohol thus relating to her not being punished by society alike Kelly is in the film. Furthermore there will be candles and lighters as the teens explore the house and find occult symbols.

Make-up and test shoot pictures
Today I tested make-up looks that we will use on the possessed antagonist in our film. I used youtube as a reference on DIY videos to aid me in the process of making of the cuts and scratches on the face. Using latex, fake blood and white and black face paint I created the deadly look for the actress. I then used the camera and green room to take test shoot images for the magazine and film poster for the pre-production bullet point in the brief. I photographed the model in various ways from both low and eye angle using a variety of shot type so the individual using them images for the poster and magazine can choose the most suitable and easily manipulate them.

Narrative essay 1b
“To gaze implies more than to look at – it signifies a psychological relationship of power, in which the gazer is superior to the object of the gaze”, this was stated by Jonathan Schroeder. This quote portrays a feminist view as it emphasises that horror submits to the patriarchy and male dominance in society. The feminist view-point is represented in The Vatican Tapes as the possessed is female and thus shows her weakness as her body become took over and thus led to her losing control of herself. Furthermore, the patriarchal representation is put under emphasis as there is only one prominent female in the trailer. The rest of the actors are male and thus this represents the dominance of males in society.
Mulvey's male gaze theory is represented in The Vatican Tapes as there is only one female who is prominent in the trailer and she is wearing a white shirt night gown throughout the majority of the trailer. This draws on the male gaze as the audience judge the character on her appearance and her body is on show thus enticing the men's attention.
Genre essay 1B
Narrative is a term used in media of which means to communicate the storyline through the uses devices. The sub-genre I have chosen for my trailer is psychological. The trailer most influential and alike mine is The Vatican tapes. The Vatican tapes is conventional to the general genre of horror as it follows the codes and conventions of illustrating a narrative. The Vatican tapes is inclusive of the stereotypical attributes of 'the other' (being the possessive being, the antagonist), the use of teenagers and the protagonists.
The trailer uses Todorov's theory of structure to illustrate the narrative. His theory states every horror film is inclusive of 3 stages: equilibrium, disequilibrium and resolution. The Vatican tapes is a trailer of which shows all three of these stages, however only to an extent. The idea of any trailer is to entice the audience into watching the film, it should only show the beginning and middle and tease the end rather than give it completely away. The resolution part of Todorov's theory is usually at the end of a film, but it is shown in The Vatican tapes to a certain extent. The stages also are not portrayed in the typically conventional way that would be expected. The trailer starts out with a short equilibrium of a synagogue/place of worship with a priest praying inside however is followed with a transitional slide giving history of the film, allowing insight of the past and what the film will be about. This scene is the disequilibrium as it is a disruption on the next shots shown, of which is a teenager's birthday party. The party shows the equilibrium of the film, the happy, content place in suburbia this mirroring safety and security. However the disruption is introduced again as the teenager becomes possessed, each scene speeds up and shows codes and conventions of the psychological sub-genre it is following, e.g. levitation, scarring, bruising etc. The resolution is then hinted through the use of conventional character for psychological horrors. The use of priests hint at the resolution of film as they perform exorcisms on the possessed.
Carroll's theory of stages in a horror also helps contrast the narrative of a horror. The trailer shows the three stages: onset phase, discovery phase and disruption. The onset phase is the disorder of the 'monster' this is shown in the trailer as the possession begins to become evident for the turning-antagonist and the discovery phase is when those around her notice also. The disruption, alike Todorov's theory, is at the stage when the disorder is destroyed. The disruption in this trailer is shown through the use of priests and their dialogue.
Levi-Strauss' theory of binary opposites also allows the audience to understand the narrative in the trailer. The use of binary opposites shown is bad v good and man v female. The bad is represented as the female as she is the possessed and the good is illustrated as the priests trying to exorcise the possessed. This also links to the feminist theory's on horror as it shows that the patriarchy is dominating females as they are shown to be vulnerable and easily turned evil. The good v evil opposites shown allow the audience to understand who are the protagonists and the antagonist and who they should be afraid of.

In conclusion the trailer: The Vatican Tapes, uses a mixture of typical media conventions such as dialogue, language, scenery, lighting and camera shots/editing to illustrate a narrative and also pairs all of this with theories applied to the genre and sub-genre.
Representation essay 1B
Gender is the main topic area to be discussed in The Vatican Tapes. The men in the film are the protagonists and thus are seen to be hero's. The men, although not as powerful as the possessed, are still portrayed as dominant. The men are represented as brave and moral men as they are ordinary mortals yet try and rid the girl of the demon possessing her, the supernatural. The social construction of 'masculinity' is represented in the film as the it mimicks the fantasy fairytale idea of a man saving he vulnerable female.
Robin Wood said: “One might say that the true subject of the horror genre is the struggle for recognition of all that our civilization represses and oppresses". He states that horror films have subtext's behind the shocking of the audience. Stating that the main subtext is the oppression in society. This can be applied to The Vatican Tapes in relation to Mulvey's theory of the male gaze as the main female role, although the antagonist, is dressed in 'pure' colours such as white and she has minimal makeup, loose, untouched hair thus creating an 'innocent' virginal or child like appearance.

Genre essay 1B
"Genre is a recurring type of category of text as defined by structural and thematic change" - David Buckingham
Genre within the film industry divides the productions into those that have similar attributing factors such as narratives/contexts, characters, mise-en-scene and iconography.
Horror is a genre and can be further categorised into hybrids and sub-genres. Hybrid genre is two or more genres merged together for example mixing sci-fi and horror in Alien films. Sub-genre's of horror are mainly categorised into one of the nine following: slasher, splatter, psychological, thriller, monster, vampire, werewolf, j-horror or zombie. Each genre and sub-genre has a collection of codes and conventions they follow strictly to ensure they are fitting within the genre successfully and the audience can tell the sub-genre automatically through the familiarity.
Burdon's theory states that there is a constant in genre as it is inclusive of stock characters and situations, iconography, setting and history and consistent themes. This is all makes up the 'genre formula'. I intend on applying Burdon's theory to my trailer as I will be including intertextual references in my trailer to ensure it follows the codes and conventions of the genre I intend on using.
Metz is a theorist whom states there are 4 stages in genre: experimental, classical, revision stage, parodic stage and deconstructive. These stages have developed over the years of cinematography as they all tested the boundaries of genre.
Neale states that repetition in genre is key. The intertextual references used from previous films in the genre make the film predictable and thus the audience can easily identify and place the film in a genre. I will be using this theory in my trailer as I have taken a multitude of references from previous films made to ensure familiarity is evident for he audience.
