Semiotics - Barthes
Based upon denotation (what word is) and connotation (word association). TThe question "What do we associate this with and why?" is asked.

Semiotics is the study of signs and the meanings associated with by the people in the society: the sign itself is meaningless.

'Are we the baddies?' symbols, "why a skull? why not a star?". Why is the skull so bad? Its because of the connotations of the skull, the meanings created and agreed upon in society around the symbolism of a skull.
A sign is meaningless unless you attach a meaning to it and agree upon it in society.
